It turned out (see the pun), quite different than what I started with. There's just a tiny speck of sapwood on the pen body; and a tiny sapwood "island" near the clip. This goes to show that with wood, you'll never know what you're going to get until you've actually made it.
And this also further emphasizes the point that all items are unique even though they come from the same species of wood. A tiny offset during drilling or a knot in the tree can all contribute to the uniqueness of each and every item.
