Ever since creating the first deck, I've taken a keen interest in making longboard decks. Not only that, I've been using the natural beauty of different wood species to spice up one or both sides of the deck.
The longboard deck is made from ten 1/16 Canadian hard maple veneers that were glued and pressed together in a vacuum press. The process was first developed by Ted Hunter from www.roarockit.com. During the process, all the sheets were glued flat; the extra layer provides the same stiffness as the a deck with a slight convex shape.
The bottom of the board has a cross patter of two alternating woods Beech and Sapele with Maple as the border between the patterns. This particular species of Beech is European and characterised by the pale cream colour with slighgly darker grain freckles. This contrasts the Sapele which has brown colour and swirly grain. Both veneers are brough together by the North American Maple veneer that acts as a separator between them.
The board is finished with six coats of exterior varnish to provide ample protection against the elements. In addition, the exterior varnish has UV inhibitors that prevent the cured film from breaking down. The longboard has clear grip tape on top of the board to provide safe footing for the rider.
The deck is a top-mount deck where the truck are mounted on the bottom of the board. Due to the larger wheel size, 1/2 risers have been added to prevent the sheels from binding against the wheel. The longboard is furnished with brand new Bear Trucks and 83mm x 53mm 78a durometer flywheels.
