Nature has an artistic expression in almost everywhere you look. When I saw this piece of Myrtle Burl veneer I knew the only way to display the beauty is to display the full piece. Myrtle is native to Australia and belongs to the same family as the beech tree of Europe. Myrtle is highly valued for its rich colours and grain pattern. Considering the burl's orange colour and two distinct grain patterns - the straight-er lines in the centre and the complete curly lines everywhere else - all I needed to do was put it in an equally stunning frame.
The process was simple, yet involved. The first step was to glue the veneer onto 3mm Baltic Birch veneer core plywood; then glue it to a 6mm Baltic Birch veneer core plywood that serves as canvas. This way the veneer will be raised from the canvas to give it a 3D effect. Once the canvas was ready, it was time to fit it inside the frame.
Sapele wood was used for the frame. Sapele is native to Africa; the wood is close grained with interlocking to ribbon grain pattern, fine uniform texture, and good natural lustre. This perfectly complements and contrasts the Myrtle burl in both colour and grain pattern. The edges of the frame has also been extended to give it an oriental look. At the back, the frame is sealed with North American Maple veneer.
The entire frame has been finished with Pure Tung Oil. The Tung Oil penetrates the wood to emphasize the grain and colour. The oil does not contain artificial thinners or cure-accelerants and is approved for food-contact items.
This is a truly stunning work of art that you can hand on your wall. You can orient it either horizontally or vertically as shown in the images. Please note changing the orientation will require adjusting the hanging hooks (using the pre-drilled holes) and wire tension.
